    Linzi's Birthday Hike

Linzi’s 27th Birthday Hike by Allison McCarthy

Last year’s birthday hiking adventure was so successful, that for my 27th birthday we drove to South San Francisco to conquer my last large San Francisco park – San Bruno Mountain State Park!

    My 27th Birthday

What the hell - style for days.

On March 13, 2014, a Thursday, I turned 27. I woke to birthday sweet texts from Laura and Sean, a text from my brother, and phone calls from my beloved parents who fell asleep before midnight the night before. Chris made an adorable granola heart on top of my yogurt.

Rupaul’s Drag Race: Battle of the Seasons

I am in love with Rupaul’s Drag Race. I’ve been a diehard fan since Season 2 (I missed ‘The Lost Season 1’ the first time it aired). My favorite queens are Raja, Willam, and Raven (in that order) and I’m currently in a Rupaul Drag Race Season 6 Fantasy League with like-minded co-workers. My team, Fierce Fishes, comprised of Courtney Act & Gia Gunn is holding down second to last place. Damn you Gia!

    Hike to Tennessee Cove

Last June Bert, Iris, Chris, and I did the the Coastal, Wolf Ridge, and Miwok Trail Loop in the Marin Headlands. At the time it was so foggy (and eventually rainy) that we never saw any of the beautiful vistas we knew were there and vowed to return. The perfect opportunity struck when David Hamilton came for an interview in Mill Valley. David, the sporty person that he is, was pumped to hike with us – but none of us knew what we were in for.

Craft Swap IX: Holiday Cards Recapitulation

The final card arrived a month ago! I apologize for posting this so late. Similar to last year, I felt pretty loved over the holiday season and was impressed with everyone’s mad card making skills. This year Chris and I hung a string with two separate sections to make sure all of the cards would fit. Without further ado, here are the 2013 cards in the order I received them (if I can remember correctly):

Elephant Seals at Año Nuevo State Park

Año Nuevo State Park. Photo by Chris.

During our tour of the Marine Mammal Center for my birthday last year, the tour guide mentioned that you can witness Elephant Seals mating in December through early February down the coast at Año Nuevo State Park. At the time I was bummed because it had literally just ended, but I kept a mental note to make sure we wouldn’t miss the upcoming season. Chris and I had seen recordings of their bloody battles on the BBC’s Life in the Freezer and hilariously mocked on Futurama, so we stoked at the chance to witness it in real life.

    Thanksgiving in Arizona

    The Berries. Photo by Chris.

2013 was the first year Chris and I spent Thanksgiving and Christmas together! As everyone and their mother liked to point out – “it was a big step”, even though it didn’t feel like it for us. For Thanksgiving we traveled to Arizona to hang out with Chris’s family and friends: Douglas, Austin & Declan, Jack, Melinda & Dick, Stook & Fallon and, to our surprise, Margeaux & Neal.

    Food Memories Immortalized

I’ve always wanted a tattoo. When I was in highschool it was a Clow Card, in college a stingray, and for awhile after college I got kind of morbid and daydreamed about getting ‘clue’ tattoos. I imagined my body found unrecognizable at the bottom of lake and some Sherlock-like detective deducing my identity based on my tattooed symbols; for instance, a rabbit for the year and two fish for the month I was born. Even though I dreamed of getting one frequently, I never was fierce enough to make the move. On July 4, 2011 Cache Creek’s ‘Widow Maker’ rapid left a 13-stitch gash in my left leg that was made worse by my skin’s allergic reaction to Neosporin. My unblemished skin had been irreversibly marked and was no longer precious. All of my fears subsided.

One day, out of the context of a tattoo, Chris and I were to discussing what we loved now and would love forever. It wasn’t even a question: ice cream. Cold and creamy, full of flavor, fat and sugar (all things good) packaged neatly in a transportable, light and crunchy cake cone.

In the words of Humphry Slocombe – lick that!

    Angel Island’s Sunrise Campsite

Angel Island is my favorite park. It’s full of natural beauty and wildlife, rich in history, and small enough that you feel like you can conquer it in a day. Before camping on the island, I visited 3 times and each time I learned something new. However, when I started planning our camping trip to Angel Island I was surprised by the lack of information easily available. I found a few first hand accounts and a couple poor quality pictures, but even the pamphlets available on Angel Island didn’t contain everything a camper might want to know. The only way to really know is to go, but I’m going to attempt to capture all of my learnings so that your future Angel Island camping trip is the best it can possibly be.
